A Quiet Café in Niseko: Bird Men and the Last Snow of Spring

Homemade sandwich lunch at Bird Men café Niseko

A few days ago, I visited a small café called Bird Men in Niseko.

Even in April, there was still snow left on the ground, but the air already felt like spring. The café has a peaceful garden where wild birds come and go throughout the day, and you can quietly watch them through the large windows inside.

The owner told us there are fewer birds now compared to winter, but we still spotted nuthatches, a woodpecker, and even a tiny mouse running across the snow.

The atmosphere felt calm and very local — the kind of place you could easily miss if you didn’t already know it was there.

A Quiet Spring Lunch

When we visited, there were two lunch plate options: a hand-roll sushi plate and a sandwich plate.

I chose the hand-roll sushi set, which came with chicken, herring, several kinds of vegetables, and soup. Everything felt carefully prepared and surprisingly filling.

After lunch, we ordered sakura roll cake and coffee.

The roll cake was probably my favorite part of the visit. The sponge was incredibly soft, with a gentle cherry leaf aroma that made it feel somewhere between a Western dessert and a traditional Japanese sweet.

We ordered one cake to share, and the owner kindly served it already divided into two plates for us. Since we visited early in the day and were the only customers there at the time, the whole experience felt especially warm and personal.

Handmade Wooden Crafts and a Peaceful Atmosphere

The café also displays many handmade wooden crafts created by the owner, and some of them are available for purchase as souvenirs.

Bird Men feels less like a tourist café and more like a quiet local place where you can slow down and enjoy the changing seasons in Niseko.

It seems the café is not open every day, and reservations are preferred.
